Lot Essay

Edward Dannreuther, pianist, writer and teacher, married the daughter of Constantine Ionides, Chariclea, in 1870. Best known as the friend and champion of Wagner, he founded the Wagner Society in 1872 and promoted the Wagner Festival. He was also a close friend and mentor of Hubert Parry. The letters are to Edward, Chariclea and their sons, Captain Tristan Dannreuther (1872-1966), Rear Admiral Hubert Dannreuther (1880-1977) and his wife Jane, and Sir Sigmund Dannreuther (1873-1964).
