The manuscript describes the events of the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots year by year, ending with a note on the present state of Scotland in 1578. A postscript has been added in another hand describing Mary's great steadfastness at her execution on 18 February 1587: 'They are not few, the English authors, who have spoken of this fact, and some still want to, that reasons of vanity moved Queen Elizabeth to decide upon her death ... [T]he Queen of Scotland was generally reputed to be more beautiful than the English Queen who had the desire and the power to overcome her in political and private matters'.

Marcaldi's La prima storia di Maria Stuarda, da un manoscritto italiano del secolo xvi was published in Turin in 1907.
