Lot Essay

The drawing is related to a picture sold in Paris, Drouot, 13 December 1977, lot 22 and illustrated in L. Salerno, Pittori di Paesaggio del Seicento a Roma, Rome, 1976, no. 80.5. The picture shows only slight differences from the drawing: the figures in the foreground were added and the Pyramid of Cestius is replaced by a round classical building. This and the following lots are from the same series and have the same provenance as two of Lemaire's drawings in the Albertina, Vienna, E. Knab and H. Widauer, Die Zeichnungen der Französischen Schule, Vienna, 1993, F. 214 and F. 216, illustrated.
