Lot Essay

The attribution has been confirmed on the basis of a photograph by Alvin Clark who dates the drawing to 1635-42, Perrier's second Roman period. The sheet is comparable to the drawing of Christ in the House of Mary and Martha in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, H.T. Goldfarb, From Fontainebleau to the Louvre: French Drawings from the Seventeenth Century, exhib. cat., The Cleveland Museum of Art, 1989, no. 62, illustrated, and another formerly with Katrin Bellinger, Italian Drawings, London, 1988, no. 21 (as Lodovico Gimignani; recognized as Perrier by Pierre Rosenberg and Erich Schleier).
