Lot Essay

Professor Marcel Roethlisberger, noting the minute handling of the pen in dots, dates the drawing to circa 1670. The three figures on the verso are found throughout Claude's works but the closest parallel can be found in the three figures in the foreground of Parnassus with Minerva visting the Muses in Jacksonville, Florida, M. Roethlisberger, Claude Lorrain, The Paintings, New Haven, 1961, no. LV195, figs. 315-6. Claude's drawing of the picture in The Liber Veritatis is dated 1680 although two of the three further drawings related to this composition are dated 1676, M. Roethlisberger, op. cit., nos. 1121-4, illustrated.
