The sitter may be Anthony, eldest son of Sir Robert Henley, of The Grange, Northington, Hampshire, and his first wife, Catherine, daughter of Sir Anthony Hungerford of Blackbourton, Oxfordshire. Anthony Henley was elected for Andover as a Whig M.P. in 1698 and died in 1711. His son, Anthony, inherited the manors of Northington and Swarraton, known as The Grange. It is believed that the portrait passed to his second son, Sir Robert Henley, created Earl of Northington in 1764. The Grange was sold to the Barings on the death of the 2nd Lord Northington in 1786, and the pictures passed to their Henley cousins at Leigh House. The pictures then passed to the Torbocks of Crossrigg Hall, Westmoreland.
