Lot Essay

The sitter, the daughter of John Van Alst, of Flanders, was born in 1602 and married Sir Charles Harbord, Kt., of Stanninghall (for whom see the previous lot) in 1626. She died in 1664. In this portrait she holds an oval, gilt-brass cased verge watch with lunar and date indications which would have been produced by an English or Flemish craftsman between 1590-1610.
