The Betrayal of Christ

We are grateful to Mr. Everett Fahy for the attribution to Callisto Piazza. He notes the similarities between the present work and the artist's signed and dated altarpiece of 1538 of the same subject in the church of the Incoronata at Lodi (see the catalogue of the exhibition, I Piazza da Lodi: Una tradizione di pittori nel Cinquencento, Lodi, Museo Civico and the church of the Incoronata, Oct. 7-Dec. 17, 1989, pp. 262ff, no. 42, illustrated), where the figures of Saint Peter and Malchus are reversed but otherwise remarkably similar.
