Lot Essay

This auspicious motif was first used on a lacquer sword stand as part of the Hatsune no chodo set of 1637-9, see Sendai-shi Hakubutsukan [Sendai City Museum], Daimyoke no konrei [Daimyo weddings] (Sendai, 2000), cat. no. 58.
