JOSEPH PHELPS
Joseph Phelps' flagship wine is its Bordeaux "Médoc-style" blend, Insignia. Showcased here is a large format bottle of the fantastic 1994 vintage with hand etched art work by David Sugar and Carol Iselin. The composition of the wine is 88 Cabernet Sauvignon, mostly from the Las Rocas Vineyard in the Stags Leap District, 10 Merlot and 2 Cabernet Franc. The Backus vineyard south of Oakville has provided the winery with extraordinary Cabernet Sauvignon since 1977. Rare double-magnums of the great 1978, 1985 and 1994 vintages are offered together as a collection. The new label introduced in 1994 commemorates the exceptional quality of the vineyard and evokes the unique, brick-red color that distinguishes its soil.
