The design of foot on this set of chairs relates to that on several chairs designed by Thomas Chippendale (d. 1779). The closest comparable foot design appears on the set of hall chairs at Nostell Priory, Yorkshire, supplied by Chippendale in c. 1775 and illustrated in C. Gilbert, The Life & Work of Thomas Chippendale, vol. II, p. 97, fig. 157. Another comparable design of foot is featured on the set of eighteen giltwood armchairs supplied in 1773 for the State bed and dressing-rooms at Harewood House, Yorkshire (ibid., p. 106, fig. 178). Chippendale also supplied a set of eight armchairs for the salon at Nostell Priory, c. 1778 with similar leaf-wrapped feet (ibid., p. 108, fig. 184).
