His interest in all things mechanical attracted him to motor racing in the 1930s, working for a time at Brooklands, before turning his attentions to photography. A year in the Royal Tank Corps (1926-7) stood him in good stead for active service between 1941 and 1945 in the Indian Army, serving with the Indian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. He was granted the rank of Honorary Captain on leaving the army in 1945. Richard's love of machinery and his skill at working with metal led him to antique firearms, and he will be best remembered as one of the country's foremost antique firearm restorers, spending many years working closely with his friend, the late W. Keith Neal. Chapman wrote a manuscript on the care and restoration of antique firearms which was published in limited numbers along with a previously unpublished monograph by J.N. George on the same subject in a book entitled Cleaning, Repairing & Restoring Antique Firearms, a copy of which is included in lot 4
