Lot Essay

Built in 1851, the iron screw steamer S.S. New York was a typical example of the type of ship that was soon to supercede the wooden sailing packets on the North Atlantic. The S.S.New York was built by Tod and McGregor at Glasgow and the New York Steamship Company. She was sold to the Inman Line in 1859, and was destroyed by fire off Nantucket on July 31, 1865.
