A FAMILLE ROSE 'EUROPEAN SUBJECT' MEIPING
LATE QIANLONG

The vase engraved with fruiting peach and pomegranate branches between borders of leaves and ruyi heads and painted in famille rose enamels with a European gentlemen being offered a flower and a branch of coral by his manservant, a rocky cliff beside them growing with chrysanthemum and prunus (some flaking to enamels)--12½in. (31.5cm.) high

Lot Essay

This vase belongs to an interesting group of European subject porcelains, not of Imperial quality and probably decorated at Canton, but intended for the Chinese market, not for export. Hervouet and Bruneau, op. cit., illustrate a bowl with similar decoration and a Qianlong mark (p. 108). See also Christie's London, October 30,1989, lot217, for a similar dish with Qianlong seal mark.
