A VERY RARE DOCUMENTARY STONE FIGURE OF GUANYIN
DATED 22ND YEAR OF CHENGHUA, CORRESPONDING TO AD 1486, AND OF THE PERIOD
Carved from a pale buff stone, seated in dhyanasana on a double-lotus pedestal, the hands lowered in dhyanamudra, the serene face with down-cast eyes, wearing an undergarment tied around the waist and a loose outer garment well carved with rhythmic folds and pleats open at the chest to reveal a festooned necklace, the hair falling in trifurcated plaits over each shoulder, the back with a five-line dated inscription (topknot missing, small losses)--36in. (91.5cm.) high.
