A RARE PAIR OF INSCRIBED HENAN OIL-SPOT GLAZED BOWLS

Each wide bowl rising to a vertical rim and covered in a thick speckled black glaze, the interior with oil spots concentrated within five roundels, the exterior with glaze thining towards the base exposing the buff stoneware, both bowls with a signature, probably later added, Li Ju?--4 3/8in. (10.6cm.) diam. (2)

Lot Essay

It is unusual to find an oil-spot glaze decoration applied in medallions. However, a related bowl in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, with five splashed medallions reserved on an oil-spot ground is illustrated in Oriental Ceramics, Kodansha Series, vol. 12, monochrome plate no. 39
