Lot Essay

Watt explains that only the signatures Zhiting and Zigang are found on jade carvings of the Kangxi period. Other pieces by the artist of the present lot are known; one is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Gourds and butterflies form a rebus for 'numerous descendants', literally, spreading like melon vines, indicated in the inscription. The boys suggest the descendants will be male
