A SMALL LACQUER INCENSE CONTAINER (KOGO)

Constructed as a rectangular 'inro' placed at a diagonal to a square box, decorated principally in hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, togidashi and kirigane on the square lid with a gold landscape of cranes flying over a pine beach beneath a silver moon in clouds, the surface of the 'inro' portion of the lid patterned with a courtier seated beneath a raised blind, the 'ojime' of the 'inro' gyobu and the 'manju netsuke' brownish-black lacquer with a stippled surface, the sides of the box decorated in similar techniques with a biwa on a veranda, hills of flowering trees and gold fans on a roiro-nuri ground, interior nashiji--2 1/8in. (5.3cm.) high, 5 1/8in. and 3½in. (13 and 8.3cm.) diameters
