Of rounded rectangular shape designed on the lid with a cormorant on rocks, waves and sea shells under the mist-shrouded moon, the waves and rocks rendered in gold hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with okibirame, kimpun and uchikomi details, the cormorant inlaid shakudo and the shells actually of inlaid shell, ivory, gilt-metal or silver, the moon a thin sheet of inlaid gilt-metal and the clouds colored brown and gold accented by kimpun and kirigane, the background sky and pebbly beach nashiji with random large pieces of cut gold, the sides matching the ground; the underside of the lid decorated in gold and silver takamaki-e, hiramaki-e, togidashi and okibirame with a waterfall, trees and rocks, distant hills and a Chinese pavilion and bridge in the foreground, further rocks and trees on the inkstone frame containing the inkstone and gilt-metal peony form mizuire, the removable implement tray containing a knife, ink stick holder with silver tip, a silver paper pricker and brush, all in matching nashiji cases, the inkstone engraved on the base with the name of the carver Sakusu Takada ju Murakami saku, interior of the lower section and the base roiro and nashiji, rims silver--9½ x 8¾ x 1½in. (24.2 x 22.3 x 3.7cm.)
