Of rectangular shape with canted corners and raised on four bracket feet, decorated on the exterior in mokume togidashi and on the lid with a recessed panel of peonies on a roiro and hirame ground, the blossoms rendered in gold foil or in gold and silver maki-e, and the foliage fundame, the underside of the lid designed with a shishi and brocade ball in iro-e togidashi on a roiro-nuri ground, the lower compartment roiro and nashiji, the base with bracket supports black lacquer with gold hiramaki-e scroll; fitted with a silver butterfly mizuire and round inkstone--10 7/8 x 7½ x 3 3/8in.
