Of rectangular shape elaborately decorated on the exterior with a stand of chrysanthemums by rolling waves and rocks on a hirame ground, the flowers of gold, silver and red takamaki-e and of togidashi which appear purple when placed in reflected light, the stems and blossoms enhanced by small pieces of gold and applied silver simulating drops of moisture, the waves gold and black togidashi with accents of nashiji and applied gold and silver, the gold and silver rocks embellished with kirigane and silver and gold, the lower border fundame patterned with clusters of gold and silver kirigane and hiramaki-e grasses; the interior designed with stands of bellflowers, chrysanthemums, grasses and rocks in gold, silver and red with kirigane and hirame details on a nashiji ground and fitted with a two-section chrysanthemum-form mizuire of shibuichi, shakudo and silver and gilt, and an inkstone; the underside of the lid designed in the same techniques employed on the lid with additional inlaid aogai with Kikujudo, the Chrysanthemum Boy, leaning on a rock and gazing at waves, a waterfall, overhanging rocks and a stand of chrysanthemums framing the scene, the sky area nashiji matching the lower interior, rims silver--9 1/8 x 9 7/8 x 1¾in.
