Of rectangular shape decorated on the cover with maple leaves floating on a stream, the water intriguingly rendered flowing by nuggets of mercury moving between 'windows' of clear lacquer, the outlines of the stream gold and silver foil and the waves black lacquer dusted with kimpun and accented by silver and gold kirigane and togidashi, the leaves gold, brown and red lacquer in low relief to the roiro and nashiji ground, the design continued on the sides, the base roiro; the underside of the lid also decorated with an autumn theme of a crying stag, maple tree and large applied-silver moon, the leaves of gold and silver lacquer, the gnarled tree trunk gold with embellishments of cut gold and silver, the stag gold, silver and red takamaki-e, the ground nashiji, the lower section of the box decorated with further maple leaves on a matching ground; fitted with a copper mizuire and inkstone, rims silver--9 3/8 x 9 x 1 5/8in. (23.7 x 22.7 x 14.2cm.)
