A FINELY MODELED SANCAI-GLAZED POTTERY FIGURE OF A HORSE

The well-proportioned, muscular horse standing foursquare on a rectangular base, the head turned slightly to the left and crisply modeled with a harness with 'apricot-leaf' ornaments, the body of the horse covered with a pale, finely crackled straw glaze, the back with a splash-glazed saddle-cloth and green-glazed saddle, the brown straps on the horse's rump and chest suspending further ornaments

Lot Essay

A horse with similar trappings, saddle and distinctive color, also displaying attractive streaks of glaze continuing down the body from 'apricot-leaf' ornaments, but with its head raised, is illustrated in Mayuyama, Seventy Years, vol. 1, Tokyo, 1976, p. 77, pl. 205

The result of Oxford thermoluminescence test no. 866d93 is consistent with the dating of this lot
