A RARE AND FINELY PAINTED FAMILLE ROSE VASE
QIANLONG

The lantern-shaped body finely painted with a scene of two scholars conversing in a landscape, with towering pine, willow and wutong trees overhead and a small open-sided pavilion nearby on the shore of a rippling lake, all separated by further rippling waves from a large pavilion perched on the far shore at the edge of blue-green mountains partially shrouded with mist, the reverse painted in black with a fourteen-character poem, yi lai ying zhang san shen, sheng hua chu xiang ba jing tu, and with three puce seals, ban xian, xiu zhu and zhuang song, the rim gilded

The poem may be translated, 'Over mountains and seas bringing scenes of the Three Peaks, then painting them forth as Eight Views of Xiao-Xiang'. The seals may be translated, 'companions to leisure', 'trimming bamboo' and 'sturdy pine'

A closely related vase dated to the Qianlong period is illustrated by Soame Jenyns in Later Chinese Porcelain, London, 1951, pl. XCIII, no. 1, and another with a slightly longer neck, and a Qianlong seal mark, in the Freer Gallery of Art is illustrated in Oriental Ceramics, The World's Great Collections, Tokyo, 1981, vol. 9, col. pl. 26

Another Qianlong vase with similar decoration and form, inscribed with a poem and the seal of Tang Ying, formerly in the Collection of Wong kai zur (sic), and the Charles E.
