POTTER, BEATRIX. Autograph letter (signature clipped), to Daisy [Margaret Hammond], expressing sympathy for a deceased relative(?), mentioning farm and animal matters, etc. Sawrey, Ambleside, 17 June 1920. 6¼ pages, 8vo, written on rectos and versos of 2 folded sheets, signature clipped from letter, a little spotting, some creases from folding.
"...I have been shocked to hear from your Aunt Lydia this morning, about '2.' My first thought is what an upsetting thing for them - and what a peaceful ending for poor '2.' She has written to me once or twice a year, rather mournfully, she generally referred to the difficulties of the times, and seemed so anxious about the future - which for her is spared." Potter goes on to describe her mother's relationship with her and an telling incident involving a white costume: "It was most unfortunate my mother didn't take to her. It was a great deal of it due to that unlucky white costume! Really a very simple pretty one;but I could have warned her both my parents always were rubbed up by seeing people attired in white!..." At the end of the letter Potter gives an update on some of her farm animals: "I have a lot of chickens, 9 young turkeys, 2 pigs etc. specially my own charge, as well as rabbits. The farm animals have enjoyed the good grass season, but we lost a big lamb yesterday...it did look a lot of nice meat wasted..."
