POTTER, BEATRIX. Autograph letter signed ("H.B. Heelis"), to Mr. Spedding Byers, discussing the possibility of letting some of her land to Byers for a bowling green. Sawrey, 17 November 1920. 2½ pages, 8vo, on rectos only, a few pale brown spots; with original type-addressed envelope. With a lengthy post-script additionally signed ("H.B. Heelis").
"I have carefully considered your application for land to make a bowling green. You suggested a site in Crook Meadow; or another upon the southern side of the road, coming over the hill. I have never approved the taking of productive agricultural land for purposes of recreation; and two seasons of scarcity make the suggestion particularly ill timed..." Potter goes on in her lengthy postscript to suggest: "I may mention that Mr. Heelis & I have sometimes in conversation discussed the suitability of the lower end of the Hill Top grass flat for a bowling green...[but] itmust be clearly understood that if I made a green, and permitted the green to be used, I should do so for the general advantage and enjoyment - not for the benefit of any one section of the community." See Taylor, Letters, p. 265.
