In November 1938 Beatrix Potter had been in the Women's Hospital, Catherine Street, Liverpool with what was diagnosed as 'an insignificant carbuncle.' But by late March, however, the situation had gotten worse, and it was determined that Beatrix would have to undergo a hysterectomy. From his hotel in Liverpool, Beatrix's husband William Heelis, writes their close friend and neighbor, Cecily Mills. "Dear Miss Mills, Many thanks for your letter - I am glad the dogs are behaving well. I have just returned from the 'hospital' and Mrs. Heelis has had a good night - except for a troublesome 'cough.' She had just had 'porridge!' for breakfast. It is just a week since the op. and I am beginning to be more hopeful. I saw the surgeon yesterday and he appeared to be satisfied..." He continues in the postscript, "Mrs. Heelis was very pleased with the violets and other flowers..."
