"...This petrol shortage is most tiresome for those who cannot climb into a bus. I have been going once a fortnight to Troutbeck Park farm, but I go through Hawkshead and Ambleside to do errands on the road there...The war news is exciting and heartening - surely the war is taking a turn right way at last. It is a very anxious time for women who have husbands & sons in the Middle East - so far the Hawkshead men have not been casualitites...Mr. Heelis keeps well - he's getting rather tired - it is such continual worry! I think I take things easier than he does. I just laugh. When one remembers what other countries are suffering - well - hard work and worry don't count? Farming is very interesting now-a-days - but the forms and regulations and account-keeping - are enough to drive anyone silly..." She concludes: "It's going to be an awkward world for old people. I do hope you and Martha are getting on all well - With love yrs. sincerely Beatrix Heelis."
