Rembrandt portrays Christ in the final critical moment of His human incarnation "from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour, and about the ninth hours Jesus cried with a loud voice... My God, My God why hast thou forsaken me?"

The Three Crosses and it's pendant Christ Presented to the People (B. 76) are Rembrandt's two largest and most impressive plates, dating from the final years of his printmaking career. The Three Crosses was first started in 1653 and dramatically altered in this state in 1660.
