JACQUIN, NIKOLAUS JOSEPH, Baron von. Fragmenta Botanica, figuris coloratis illustrata, ab anno 1800 ad annum 1809 per sex fasciculos edita. Vienna: Mathias Andreas Schmidt, [1800-] 1809.

Large folio, 512 x 355 mm., contemporary diced russia, sides framed with floral roll-tools in gilt and blind, smooth spine gilt, board edges gilt, g.e., a few small scrapes to covers, neat restoration at tail of upper joint, plates 1 and 103 each with a small light marginal stain entering platemark but not touching subject, small hole through blank area of pl. 120, about 5 plates with very light mostly marginal spotting, coloring of pls. 28 and 87 slightly rubbed in places, minor wear at folds of folding plates 29 and 68.

FIRST EDITION, 138 engraved plates of plants and plant parts, several folding, all but two (41 and 80 as called for) hand-colored, engraved plate numbers and captions.

The work is devoted to new additions to the Schönbrunn gardens, many South African, recently sent up from the Cape by F. Boos and G. Schall, the two royal gardeners who had been dispatched there to collect specimens after the disastrous frost of 1780. Although the plates are unsigned, they are typical of the team of artists and engravers who worked with Jacquin, including Franz von Scheidel, Josef Hofbauer, Johann Scharf, Martin Sedelmayer, and Johann Knapp.
