First edition with the commentary by Joannes Atrocianus, professor of mathematics at Basel. The Hortulus of Walahfrid Strabo, later Abbot of Reichenau in Baden, written c. 842 and first published in Vienna in 1510, commemorates the garden at Reichenau in Baden, and is considered to be the first known medieval gardening book. "It has been held in affection and esteem by garden-lovers ever since [its first publication], and gives us a clear picture of the herbs grown in monastery gardens in that period" (Hunt, 11).
