A GOLD LACQUER KOBAKO WITH INTERIOR BOXES
MEIJI PERIOD (LATE 19TH CENTURY)
The rectangular double tiered box and cover decorated on the exterior in gold, red and silver takamaki-e with different varieties of overlapping plum and chrysanthemum blossoms and maple leaves, the lower case fitted with a tray rendered in gold takamaki-e on a kinji ground with silver and kirigane details with a scene of two thatched huts by a stream in a landscape dotted with flowering plums, the upper case fitted with four rectangular cases, the lid of each decorated in bright gold takamaki-e with silver details forming a continuous larger landscape of a waterfall, stream and further flowering trees, the sides of each of the cases lacquered with togidashi gold and black kikko-hanabishi, the interiors of the small cases, tiers and undersides of the tray and box all nashiji- 5 3/8 x 3 1/4 x 3 5/8 in. (13.7 x 8.3 x 9.3 cm.)
