A WOOL JACQUARD WOVEN COVERLET
Pennsylvania, Dated 1842
Worked in red and blue wool in two parts with center seam, with three fringed and one self-bound edge, centering repeating rows of roses and star medallions, bordered at either fringed edge in repeating checkered urns issuing stylized flowers with perched birds, headed at each fully fringed corner by a square reserve centering a profile rooster standing on a stump and a rooster in the background, bordered on one side by a scrolling foliate border; together with a red, navy and green wool jacquard woven coverlet, worked in two parts with center seam in alternating rows of color with alternating bands of floral medallions and small rosettes and large medallions with small rosettes, all enclosed in a border of repeating spreadwing eagles centering trees, all self-bound with fringe applied to three sides, headed at each fully-fringed corner by block reserves inscribed "LYDIA SNYDER/JOHN KAUFMAN/1842"
