Cushion-shaped with elaborate foliate scroll borders, the high domed covers applied with similar borders and chased with radiating flutes and anthemion, with foliate and acanthus scroll handles, engraved front and back with a coat-of-arms, crest and motto within foliate scroll mantling, the stands each on four paw and acanthus feet, chased with a band of alternating flutes and anthemion and with two foliate handles, with removable liners, marked on dishes, covers and handles--length over handles 14 1/2in. The arms are those of Foley quartering those of Hodgetts, for Edward Thomas Foley, eldest son of Edward Foley, and grandson of Thomas, 1st Baron Foley. Born in 1791, he married in 1832 Lady Emily Graham, 4th daughter of James, 3rd Duke of Montrose. He died without issue in 1846.

A set of twelve silver-gilt dinner plates and six soup plates from the same service, also by Smith and of 1819, were sold in these Rooms April 18, 1989, lots 330 and 331.
