The rectangular box with rounded corners fitted with a removable tray, decorated on the exterior in iro-e takamaki-e, hiramaki-e, togidashi and okibirame with motifs alluding to Kocho ("Butterflies"), chapter 24 of the Genji monogatari (The Tale of Genji), the cover with two little pages steering a Chinese-style dragon boat within Murasaki's spring garden of flowering cherry, pines and willows, the sides decorated with a continuation of the scene, a palace musician on one side in a phoenix boat, the tray lacquered in similar techniques with two little girls dressed as butterflies, the interior and base nashiji
