A LACQUER WRITING BOX (SUZURIBAKO) AND DOCUMENT BOX (BUNKO)
meiji period (late 19th century)
The writing box rectangular with rounded corners designed with the shochikubai, a pine tree with tall, serpentine trunk, a flowering plum, young pines, small bamboo plants and rocks in gold hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, keuchi, okibirame, togidashi, uchikomi, hirame and kimpun, the sky area which extends to the sides along with additional small plants roiro covered with nashiji; the interior of the writing box designed with salt kilns, a thatched hut, pines, bamboo and rocks on the shore of an inlet, distant pine-studded hills placed in the background on the underside of the lid and flying birds placed in the sky above the bay on the lower trays, the scenes lacquered in the same techniques as the exterior on denser nashiji grounds; fitted with an inkstone lacquered in fundame on the sides below a silver mizuire cast with two cherry florets in a silver saucer, both fitted into a removable tray, and with another removable utensil tray, the area below the trays nashiji

The document box decorated en suite in larger scale and with stands of young pines and bamboo along the sides on a nashiji ground matching the exterior ground of the writing box; on the underside of the lid is a mirror-image of exaggerated size of the scene on the underside of the cover of the suzuribako, the lower interior of the document box nashiji; rims of both boxes fundame and the bases nashiji
