A LACQUER WRITING BOX (SUZURIBAKO)
meiji period (late 19th century)
Designed in the form of a koto with a central panel of simulated wood, mokume, bordered at one end with a rectangular panel of gold lacquer latticework enclosing a gilt-metal appliqué cast as swords in a cloth bag, bordered on the other end by the ravelled edge of a simulated cloth cover lacquered the same, the strings of the instrument twisted silver and the attachment holes and string supports gilt-metal; three sides of the box decorated with cranes and waves and one short side with a gyobu panel of plums and a fence; the nashiji interior fitted with an inkstone and metal kettle-form mizuire in a removable tray
