A LARGE EARTHENWARE JAR
meiji period (early 20th century), signed satsuma yaki hododa seizo and with shimazu mon
Of bulbous form colored in rich enamels and gilt with two large reserves of vases, patterned fans and paintings, each different on each side, surrounded by brocade panels of phoenixes and paulownia scroll, the neck encircled by a wide band of floral scroll and large florets, and the handles moulded in the form of fabulous beasts with exaggerated tongues, gilt manes and drawn-back red enamel ears, signed on the recessed base in cobalt blue enamel and painted in blue enamel with a large Shimazu crest
