Okazaki Tadao was born in Kyoto and in 1968 graduated from the Japanese-style painting division of the Kyoto City Art College. In 1969 and 1973 he traveled to Europe and was impressed by the work of the Italian old masters. His work of the period was strongly influenced by these paintings.
Okazaki's first one man exhibition was at the Ginza Uchiyama Gallery in 1979. Also in 1979, and again in 1983, he exhibited paintings at the Yamatane Museum, and in 1985 at the Tokyo Central Art Museum. In 1989 he had a solo exhibition at the Takashimaya department store in Tokyo.
Beginning in the late 1970's Okazaki abandoned religious and literary subject matter to return to traditional Japanese kachoga (bird-and-flower painting), with an emphasis on the depiction of flowers. Okazaki's paintings are of note as they combine Western techniques of perspective with the more abstract aspects of Eastern painting.
