The round iron plate has a surface which has been hammered and polished. It has a delicately raised edge (uchikaeshi) with many strong iron bones. The plate is pierced with a dragonfly. The hitsu-ana are original, although slightly altered in shape. The ribs in the center of each of the insect's wings are now missing--height and width 8.6cm., thickness 2.25cm.
Lot Essay
This is a classic mid-Muromachi katchushi tsuba and was fitted to the uchigatana of the period. Its most common period of use was between the Hotoku and Chokyo periods (1450-1491).
