AN ONIN SCHOOL TSUBA
MUROMACHI PERIOD (CIRCA 1500)

The iron plate is of flowerhead shape with each of the fourteen petals alternating between solid and openwork. The apertures are outlined in inlaid brass as is the seppa-dai and the hitsu-ana. The remainder of the plate is similarly inlaid with plum flowers, birds, dots of dew, Genji mon and sambiki mon. The edge has small iron bones and the hitsu-ana is original--height 8.7cm., width 8.5cm., thickness 3.5mm.

Lot Essay

This Onin style tsuba shows considerable independence in the choice and composition of the design. The inlay is fully intact.
