A BUSHU KENJO TSUBA
MEIJI PERIOD (1868-1912)

The iron plate has a chocolate brown patina and is pierced with a design of five arrow fletches, carved in the round. Ginger bud (myoga) motifs are placed at the top and the bottom. The surface is decorated in gold damascene. The rim and edge are similarly decorated with a key-fret design--height 8.1cm., width 7.7cm., thickness 4.5mm.

Lot Essay

This tsuba is a fine example of the type of presentation tsuba made in the late 19th century. The basic pattern of the tsuba is Bushu type and it could have been made by any number of fine artists working in Edo at this date.
