A KENJO SHOAMI SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1700)

The round iron plate is pierced and decorated with gold nunome. The decoration depicts a mountain temple and the design repeats itself on the reverse, with some variation. The edge and rim is similarly decorated but the gilding is worn--height 7.9cm., width 7.7cm., thickness 5.25mm.

Lot Essay

This presentation tsuba is typical of the style of the Genroku era (1688-1704). Kenjo tsuba were given by one daimyo to another, or by a daimyo to the shogun. The gift was designed to demonstrate the loyalty and devotion of the presentor to the recipient.
