A KYO-SHOAMI TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1700)

The round iron plate is carved as a twenty-five petal chrysanthemum with five boar's-eye openings (inome bori). The area between the petals and the rim is slightly recessed and is decorated in gold nunome-zogan with five chrysanthemum flowerheads and a double line of tendrils and scrolls (niju karakusa)--height and width 8.6cm., thickness at center 4.75mm., at edge 3.75mm.
