A KYO-SUKASHI TSUBA
MOMOYAMA PERIOD (1573-1600)

The round iron plate is pierced with a design of four Chinese characters (kanji): flower, bird, wind, and moon. Three fern scrolls are placed between them and there is a bird motif at the top. The rim is rounded with delicate iron bones--height 7.9cm., width 7.8cm., thickness 5mm.

This style of delicate sukashi work was popular in Kyoto during the Momoyama and early Edo periods (1573-1650). This example is from the early Edo period.
