A NAKANE HEIHACHIRO STYLE TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1850)

The rounded square shape of this iron tsuba is decorated with a center carved as a concave-sided diamond shape which connects to the carved rim. The face is inlaid with fine brass wire in very narrow rows. The diamond shape is decorated at the corners in gold nunome-zogan with niju karakusa designs. The rim has a very fine silver wire key-fret pattern typical of the Heihachiro style. The reverse has identical decoration in silver--height 8.3cm., width 7.9cm., thickness at center 4.5mm., at edge 3.75mm.

Nakane Heihachiro (1806-1870) was a retainer of the Hosokawa daimyo of Higo Province. He made many tsuba, characterized by the wire-inlaid decoration.
