A HIGO TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1850)

The otafuku mokko form iron plate is inlaid with silver and silver wire almost flush with the surface. This depicts a cherry blossom, a Hosokawa crest, and scrolling autumn grasses. This is repeated on the reverse. At the top and bottom the cherry blossom and the Hosokawa crest is pierced through the plate--height 8.4cm., width 7.9cm., thickness 5mm.

Lot Essay

This appears to be the work of one of the many independent artists working in Higo during the later Edo period. Their names are generally unrecorded although a few signed their work.
