A CONTEMPORARY TSUBA
SHOWA PERIOD (CIRCA 1968), SIGNED IN SEAL FORM MASAYOSHI (JOHN MASAYOSHI YUMOTO)

The iron plate is pierced with a design of an alighting crane, its wingtips touching above its head and its wing feathers delineated in openwork. The eye is inlaid in gold, as is the seal of the reverse of the seppa-dai--height 8.5cm., width 8.4cm., thickness 6.25mm.

This fine guard was made as a gift to Dr. Compton by John Yumoto, the noted scholar of swords. It is a copy of the famous crane tsuba design of the Higo schools. It is an excellent example of the several guards that the artist made for friends.
