Toryusai was an art name of Hamano Noriyuki II (1771-1852). Despite the inscription which states that the design was taken from Nara Toshinaga, this tsuba has more affinity with the Tanaka school than that of the old Nara school. The design may have been taken from a drawing or a rubbing of a work by Toshinaga. See Wakayama, Toso kodogu Meiji taikei, 1978, vol. I, p. 166, two lower fuchi illustrations, for similar signature with the same origin of the design.
