Seiryuken Eiju (Hidenaga) is said to have been a member of the Umetada family. He was a student of Okamoto Tetsuya Naofusa and of Okamoto Shoraku. His earliest known signature was Seiei, which he later used in his seal. He was a prolific artist with many students. The subject of this tsuba is rare for Eiju. Another example of the same design by Toshiuji of Sado is illustrated in Moslé (1932), Vol. I, no. 803, p. 257, and on plate LIX, no. 803.
